Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has called to probe into unfair decisions and cases neglected by Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) during the previous administration, and provide justice to the affected.
A statement released by MRM on the occasion of International Human Rights Day stated all cases HRCM received until recently were concluded in favour of the offenders who violated basic human rights of many individuals. Alleging the commission operated on personal motives, the statement further said HRCM remained silent over the arrest of several politicians including MRM leader and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, and neglected torture in prison against them.
The statement also called HRCM to be proactive in changing public perspective that human rights abuse is a trivial matter, and asked the commission to investigate its abuse of power in the past and provide justice to victims in order to gain public trust in the institution. MRM further called the state to establish standards to make authorities accountable in case authorities mandated with responsibilities ignore their duties.
MRM also requested all political parties and the public to render their maximum support to the state in establishing monitoring standards. Additionally, the statement demanded individual responsibility in developing Maldives as an exemplary state that ensures human rights to all people.
MRM concluded by reiterating its request to investigate cases to grant justice to the abused.
