Parliament completed 53% of impending work before recess: Speaker

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed says 53 percent of work at the parliament has been completed as parliamentarians commence a two-month recess following the end of second term of the 19th Session of the Parliament of Maldives.

Speaker Nasheed said the parliament has commenced a two-month recess on Saturday following a more productive term than the first. Nasheed commended members for their hard work, valuable time and important deliberations. Some of the major activities of the second term include the approval of State Budget for the year 2020, amendments to the Decentralisation Act and Fisheries Act.

Parliamentarians on an average attended 92% of meetings that lasted 128 hours and 37 minutes over 33 sittings of the parliament, according to statistics shared by the parliament speaker. The 395 committee meetings lasted a total of over 441 hours.
While 16 bills were submitted during the first term, the second term saw the submission of 23 bills. Furthermore, 11 bills have been completed by the parliament, while 28 bills remain pending.

The first term saw 11 petitions submitted to the parliament, while 15 petitions were submitted in the second term. All these petitions remain incomplete. However, all resolutions submitted by the parliamentarians have been completed during the second term.

The second term of the 19th Session of the Parliament saw the approval of Income Tax Bill, Amendment Bill to the Decentralisation Act and appointments to boards of MIRA, Elections Commission and Broadcasting Commission.
