Efforts must be doubled to ensure efficiency of SAARC’s decision-making: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated efforts must be doubled to ensure the decision-making process of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is more efficient, interventions more targeted, delivery more result-oriented and provide tangible benefits to the people. He made the remarks at the message sent to Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Amjad Hussain B. Sial, on the occasion of the 35th SAARC Charter Day.

In the message, President Solih conveyed felicitations from the government of Maldives to the Secretary-General of SAARC, the SAARC Secretariat, SAARC bodies and the people of all SAARC member states. The president highlighted SAARC has helped forge a strong regional identity amongst the South Asian nations and achieved significant milestones in several priority areas as identified in the Charter. He said member states must encourage greater connectivity and technical cooperation among the people of SAARC, in order to unlock the great potential in the organization.

President Solih added the realisation of the South Asian Economic Union will certainly break down many barriers to trade and act as a catalyst to boost economic prosperity in the region. He also acknowledged the foresight and vision of the founding members of SAARC, including former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, for their endeavoring spirit to promote regional cooperation in South Asia.

President concluded his remarks by reiterating the full commitment of Maldives in consolidating stronger regional cooperation among SAARC members.
