President ratifies Fifth Amendment to Constitution

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has ratified the Fifth Amendment to Constitution of Maldives. The amendment was passed by the Parliament at the 74th sitting of the third session.

Subsection A of Article 231 now states members of island councils and city councils shall be democratically elected by the community with an undisclosed vote and that along with the president of the atoll council, other members will also be elected under Subsection B of Article 231. Presidents and mayors of all local councils will now be elected with an undisclosed democratic vote, as per Subsection B of Article 231.

Furthermore, President Solih also ratified the Bill on Pesticides. The Pesticides Act encompasses a wide range of elements including setting standards for the import, use, production, export and proper disposal of pesticides. It includes best practices for the usage of pesticides correlating with health, wellness, environmental and ecological conservation

Upon ratification, the Act has been published in the ‎Government Gazette.
