Parliament has approved the report prepared by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee) after reviewing the report of Presidential Commission on Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances on the murder of former Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali.
The report was passed with 47 members voting in favour, while 10 members voted against. The report compiled by the 241 Committee included 11 recommendations regarding the case. The recommendations include taking immediate actions against individuals and parties listed in the report, while it also demanded information about the whereabouts of these people.
The committee also recommended to trace the financial transactions of such parties and individuals in an effort to identify their sources of finance. This included tracing the financial transactions of Jamiyyath Salaf in the past 7 years and identifying the movement involved in funding the murder of Dr. Afrasheem.
The report further recommended the parliament to take urgent action against the individuals who gave false information regarding the murder to authorities investigating the case. The report suggested action against former Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed as he was identified to have provided authorities with false information.
Another recommendation included in the report was to confirm and identify the suspects who fled the country following the murder. The report also called to identify the individuals who authorised their departure, their dates of travel and accomplices.
The allegations against Shaheem and Jamiyyath Salaf have been denied by them. The report concluded a group of religious extremists led by Mohamed Mazeed and Samith Mohamed tasked Azlif Rauf to murder Afrasheem.
Dr. Afrasheem Ali was killed on October 2, 2012. While Hussain Humam has been found guilty of killing him, no sufficient evidence was found against Ali Shan and a minor charged with the murder. Human has received a death sentence for his involvement in killing Afrasheem.
The verdict of Criminal Court against Humam has also been upheld by the Supreme Court as evidence proves that he is guilty.
