No room to claim DDCom report is inconclusive: Suood

President of Commission on Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances has said there is no room to say the report prepared on the murder of former Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali is incomplete. His comments follow Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla saying at the parliament the investigative commission formed under a presidential decree to investigate enforced deaths and unsolved disappearances concluded the report with no grounds to charge anyone following the probe.

Opposition politicians and people listed in the report has criticised the work of the commission saying it conducted a meaningless investigation. In response to such comments, Suood said claims there is no room to say the investigation is inconclusive as the report clearly identified extremist groups based on three witness reports, and the information Maldives Police Service (MPS) and National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) has accumulated over the past seven years.

Speaking in response to a question from Parliamentarian Mikael Naseem, Minister Imran said the report details the entire incident of the murder. He further said the commission met with the Prosecutor General (PG), MPS twice to seek recommended actions following the report.

The commission concluded not to arrest any individual listed in the report, according to Minister Imran. He said the decision was made because the commission found no evidence to charge or arrest any individual with murder.

However, the parliament, on Tuesday, approved to take action against individuals and groups implicated in the crime including former Minister of Islamic Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and religious non-government organisation Jamiyyath Salaf.
