Dismissal of judges not enough to reform judiciary: Parliament Speaker

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has said judiciary reform does not end with the dismissals of existing judges, as the sector requires capable and trained judges and facilities.

Discussing the reform of judiciary, Speaker Nasheed said the parliament is attending to disadvantageous acts of judges to ensure prudence. He said the parliament has so far dismissed two judges after investigations in to their disciplinary actions.

While two judges have been dismissed, a judge under investigation has also retired due to ill health. The amendments passed by the parliament also saw the appointment of two new judges to the apex court of Maldives.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has tasked Supreme Court Judge Dr. Azmiralda Zahir with administrating the top court following the retirement of Judge Abdulla Areef. In its last sitting, JSC decided to formulate a policy to encourage all judges to take professional development and educational programmes.
