Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan has said teachers must keep up with recent knowledge and information on various disciplines and be data experts rather than educating themselves towards attaining a certificate.
Speaking at the graduation of National Institute of Education (NIE), Minister Ibrahim Hassan highlighted the important role teachers play in student lives and said the expectations of the teachers have changed. He said the content alone does not suffice the students as information is easily accessible in the current globalised world.
The minister said students tend to ask new and inquisitive questions and to cater to the current student needs, teachers must adapt and equip themselves with the most relevant information and contemporary thinking. He said the decision of the administration to change schools to operate in single sessions is a great opportunity for teachers to develop their potential.
The ceremony saw students graduate form 6 courses run by NIE in 2019. The institution announced its decision to discontinue running pre-service courses in order to focus on courses for in-service teachers and professional development programmes.
