Nasheed and Shifaz secures MDP leadership for a second term

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Minister at President's Office Mohamed Shifaz has secured the leadership of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for a second term.

Nasheed, a former president, is a founder member of the largest and the first political party of Maldives. He ran unopposed for the presidency of the party.

Shifaz, who competed against veteran Parliamentarian Mohamed Aslam, secured the vice presidency by a fine margin.

MDP said over 87,000 members were eligible to vote in the largest internal party elections in the country. However, it is estimated about 27% of the members came out to vote.
