JSC asks to submit nominations for 3 vacant positions on Supreme Court bench

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened opportunity to submit nominations for the 3 vacant positions on the Supreme Court bench.

The announcement was made by JSC to consult President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to appoint judges to the vacant positions of the Supreme Court following the removal of Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi and Judge Adam Mohamed, and the retirement of Judge Abdulla Areef. JSC is required to forward the nominations to the president, who will select and order the nominations to his preference before asking for parliament approval.

The candidates submitting the nominations must be at least 30 years of age, must have a degree in Islamic Sharia or law and must have served as a judge or a lawyer for a period of 7 years. JSC has asked to submit the nominations by November 28.

As part of the efforts to reform the judiciary, the government has increased the Supreme Court bench from 5 to 7 and has appointed 3 new judges, including the first female judges to be appointed to the highest court of Maldives.
