Hisaan appointed as JSC President following Areef's resignation

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed Parliamentarian Hisaan Hussain as its new president following the resignation of Judge Abdulla Areef from the position.

At a sitting held on Tuesday, JSC elected Hisaan as the new president in accordance with clause 7 of the Judicial Service Commission Act.

Judge Abdulla Areef resigned from the position of the president in a letter sent to the Secretary General of JSC. However, the reason for his resignation was not explained in the letter.

The judicial watchdog is currently investigating 51 cases submitted against 4 judges, including 14 cases related to Judge Abdulla Areef. Additionally, JSC is also investigating 18 cases of Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi, 16 cases of Judge Adam Mohamed Abdulla and 3 cases of Abdul Ghanee Mohamed. The judges have been accused of repetitively warning the legislature, the executive, and junior courts in addition to obstructing work of Human Rights Commission, Elections Commission and JSC.

JSC further stated the public have raised such concerns for over a decade while the issues have also surfaced in studies carried on the judiciary by foreign experts.
