ECM expresses concern over possible delay of Local Council Elections

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has revealed the upcoming local council elections might have to be postponed if the new amendments to the Decentralisation Act are not ratified by the first week of December.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee on Decentralisation, President of ECM Ahmed Shareef said the electoral body has scheduled the election within the period specified in the law. However, Shareef noted amendments have to be brought to Elections General Act and Local Council Election Regulation in addition to the amendments to the Decentralisation Act.

Therefore, Shareef stressed on the importance of ratifying the amendments to the Decentralisation Act by the first week of December in order to hold the local council elections as scheduled. He further expressed support to the proposed amendments to the Decentralisation Act.
