Huge land plots not needed for modern agricultural projects: Agriculture Minister

Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Zaha Waheed has said huge land plots are not needed for technology-based agricultural projects, adding such techniques can be easily implemented in the small island of Maldives.

Speaking to PSM News following the inauguration of the Aidhoo, Baa Atoll, as an agricultural island, Minister Zaha said small islands in Maldives face challenges in conducting agricultural projects. She spoke on the importance of working with the residents of the atolls to make agricultural projects a success.

Highlighting cutting back the import of agricultural products to Maldives is an aim of the administration, the agriculture minister said the objectives can only be achieved by providing opportunities to efficiently continue agricultural projects.

Noting the importance of implementing modern methods in agriculture, the minister mentioned the efforts of the administration to make agricultural projects a success, including providing loans for farmers. She assured the administration would continue assisting the farmers to make agricultural projects are sustainable in Maldives. She the ministry gives importance to ensure agricultural products are healthy.

Aidhoo is a small island in Baa Atoll. However, efforts are underway in the island to implement modern agricultural methods.
