State Budget 2020: USD 18 million to reduce energy consumption

The government has proposed to spend over USD 18 million to reduce all forms energy consumption and protection of environment in 2020.

The government has allocated USD 116.3 million in the State Budget for 2020 to protect and preserve the environment. More funds are to be invested to generate renewable forms of energy and to reduce burning fossil fuels to decrease harmful effects on the environment.

The government has allocated USD 15.9 million to produce renewable energy under the Preparing Outer Islands for Sustainable Energy Development project. The project is being funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) which grants a total of USD 13.2 million for the project.

Twenty projects for waste management development at a cost of approximately USD 13.7 million and the development of sewerage facilities in Hulhumale' at a cost around USD 13 million are included in the State Budget 2020.
