New policies contribute to advancement of MNDF: Defence Chief

Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal has stated new policies have been formulated to upgrade the defence strategy of Maldives.

Speaking on the morning show of Television Maldives (TVM) to commemorate Victory Day, General Shamaal said under the revised policy much priority is to be given to defend Maldives from external aggression. During the programme, he spoke about preparations being made to confront all forms of aggression by bringing the needed changes to various departments of the defence force. He also noted the advice given by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to bring the desired changes in confronting aggression and terrorism and the needed training for military personnel.

Speaking during the show Vice Chief of Defence Force Brigadier General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef said the efforts of the defence force also depends on the assistance from neighbouring countries, especially using radar systems to maintain the maritime security of the country.

Meanwhile, Director of National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Brigadier General Zakariyya Mansoor said the naval operations conducted to obstruct drug trafficking, piracy and to safeguard the maritime boundary of the country seems successful. He noted that Maldives being an archipelago in the Indian Ocean is particularly vulnerable to illegal maritime activities and need to strengthen its maritime security.
