MPS informs Youth Ministry on findings regarding MDN report

Following investigations, Maldives Police Service (MPS) has declared the report published by Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) in 2016 entitled Preliminary Assessment of Radicalization in the Maldives slanders Islam and Prophet Mohamed (PBUH).

MPS said Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment has been informed on the findings made after consultations with three Islamic scholars. However, no further details on the matter were revealed by MPS or youth ministry. MPS began investigation the report on October 3.

The Government of Maldives has imposed a temporary cessation of activities upon MDN following widespread public condemnation of the report. The Maldives Government said it remains fundamentally committed to upholding all the rights enshrined in the Constitution, including those of free expression. The government reminded all parties the exercise of all these rights is subject to refrainment from creating communal discord or blatantly contravening the fundamental tenets of Islam.

MPS has also issued a summon for Azra Naseem and Shahindha Ismail, the two leading figures at MDN.
