PSM News has learned the two senior police officers who gained financial benefits from the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal are former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed and former Deputy Commissioner of Police Hassan Habeeb.
In a press conference last week, investigative authorities revealed 267 individuals benefited from the corruption scandal including two senior police officials, their identities were not disclosed.
However, PSM News has learnt investigative authorities have accused Hussain Waheed for receiving finances from the largest corruption scandal in the recent history of Maldives. He was appointed as Commissioner of Police on November 19, 2013 during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He was removed from the position in September 2015, following the blast on the presidential speed boat. He was known to have close relations with former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, one of the main alleged architects of the MMPRC scandal.
Meanwhile, Hassan Habeeb was appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Police on February 19, 2015. However, he was later removed from the position and appointed as a Deputy Minister at Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure. He has also been known to have close relations with Adeeb.
Investigative authorities claim about 220 million US dollars were embezzled from MMPRC.
