Illicit acts found in protests, will take action: MPS

Maldives Police Services (MPS) has instructed the public to comply with laws in arranging and conducting protests.

In a statement MPS said it would not allow protests organised against the laws and regulations. MPS said some people have organised protests disregarding the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act and illicit acts have also been noticed amongst the protestors.

MPS further stated protests inside the high security zone, or the Green Zone, have been observed while unlawful activities have also been noticed at news conferences and vehicle rallies. MPS assured security and assistance in all peaceful protests including security and traffic management in such assemblies.

MPS concluded its statement calling everyone to consider relevant laws in arranging peaceful assemblies and urged the public to act within the laws and regulations on demonstrating. MPS also assured the institution would not entertain any illegal demonstrations and confirmed prosecution against illegal protestors.
