Maldives aim to protect 20% of oceans

Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has stated Maldives aim to protect at least 20% of its oceans.

Delivering the keynote speech at the 6th Our Ocean Conference, the environment minister highlighted the deep connection between the flora and fauna of the oceans and the people. The minister further noted oceans are the richest sources for survival of the people. He said the slightest impact on marine life will have significant consequences to the people.

The environment minister called on the world to follow the Maldivian examples of environmentally conscious pole and line fishery and sustainable eco-tourism conducted as part of the efforts to protect marine life. The minister also announced aim of Maldives to protect at least 20% of its oceans to boost fish stocks, enhance the benefits of marine life and safeguard the lives of the people. He also said Maldives have decided to undertake a comprehensive marine spatial planning exercise and sustainable marine conservation programme in partnership with an international network, Blue Prosperity Coalition.

Our Ocean Conference is held to urge nations towards meaningful actions to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), identify approaches to sustainable utilisations of marine resources and analyse the impact of climate change on marine life.

The approaches and challenges are discussed in detail to reach measurable and clear commitments towards clean, healthy and productive oceans in addition to encouraging new and far-reaching actions to the best of the oceans.
