Committee approves 3 of the 4 nominations for vacant position in ECM

Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has approved 3 of the 4 nominations submitted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to be appointed to Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM).

President Solih nominated 10 individuals to be appointed to the electoral body. He prioritised former President of ECM Fuad Thaufeeg, current member of ECM Amjad Musthafa, Hassan Nazim and Mariyam Haneefa Khalid ahead of the other nominations.

Following an interview process, the parliamentary committee approved the nominations except Nazim. Prior to approving the nominations, the parliament opened opportunity for the public to submit opinion on the nominations.

The president submitted nominations for the position currently held by Amjad Musthafa whose term concludes on November 24. Therefore, the nomination which gets most votes will be appointed to the position.

Out of the nominations, Fuad Thaufeeg was removed as the President of ECM by the Supreme Court of Maldives. The court also sentenced a 6 month jail sentence on him in 2014.
