A trained workforce to increase economic growth essential: Higher Education Minister

Minister of Higher Education Dr Ibrahim Hassan has stated establishing a trained workforce and increasing the economic growth of the nation are two key areas of the administration.

Speaking at the function to mark 55th anniversary of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC), the higher education minister applauded the role of the institution in regional development. The minister also highlighted the role ITEC plays in training Maldivians in various technical fields. He focused on the importance of a trained and a skilled workforce highlighting that it is a key focus of the administration. He further said the administration is working to expand its technical and vocational training institute, Maldives Polytechnic, and establish different branches across the country.

Speaking at the function held at Hotel Gen, Ambassador to Maldives from India Sunjay Sudhir remarked the improved relations between the two countries since President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assumed power. The ambassador said the capacity building training offered to Maldives since has multiplied a fivefold. He explained India have offered Maldives 1-thousand slots to be used in a 5-year period, in addition to increasing the annual number of slots offered to Maldives from 50 to 250.

Senior officials from ministries and government institutions attended the function to mark 55th anniversary of ITEC. The institution runs training programmes in more than 160 countries worldwide.
