President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has discussed promoting renewable energy technologies in the Maldives during a meeting with Chief Executive Officer of Kokyo Tatemono Company Limited Kohei Yamashita and Professor Tsumoru Shintake from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST). The meeting was held on the side-lines of the official visit of the president to Japan.
Discussions at the meeting focused on expanding the pilot project to harness electricity from surf waves jointly carried out by Kokyo, OIST and Ministry of Environment of Maldives. The innovative technology is currently being tested in Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives.
During the meeting, Professor Tsumoru extended an invitation for Maldivian postgraduate students to undertake higher education and doctorate students to assume research at OIST. President Solih highlighted the importance of exposure and experience for Maldivians in research on renewable energy technologies and thanked Professor Shintake and OIST for the offer. He further assured the continued support of the administration for the pilot project in Kandooma and noted the practicality and significance of sustainable and renewable energy technological solutions for Maldives.
