Parliament approves Fiyaz as Information Commissioner

The Parliament of Maldives has approved Hussain Fiyaz Moosa as the Information Commissioner. The appointment was approved by the parliament with votes from 72 parliamentarians.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made 9 nominations to the parliament, highlighting 4 individuals he preferred. The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions interviewed Hussain Fiyaz Moosa, Ahmed Fayaz, Ahmed Ahid Rasheed and Fathimath Saushan. The committee approved Fiyaz, Fayaz and Ahid and forwarded the 3 nominations for the vote.

The committee broadcast the interviews live for the first time, after the parliament amended regulations to grant media the rights to broadcast committee interviews live.

The position of Information Commissioner has been vacant since Abdul Azeez Jamal Abubakuru completed his 5-year term. It is required to appoint a new commissioner within a period of 60 days, although it has been over 2 months since Abdul Azeez left office.
