Maldives Polices Services (MPS) has pledged to take legal actions against individuals behind the report published by Maldives Democracy Network (MDN) after through investigations.
In a statement, MPS asked the public to refrain from spreading and encouraging hatred, division and violence in the society in the name of protecting Islam. MPS said some individuals are trying to take advantage of the matter of national unity and security by encouraging the public to resort to hatred, division and violence.
The statement also expressed concern on actions by some individuals to portray intolerance and hatred as the resolve of Islam. The police also condemned the posters and photos on social media calling to cause harm and encouraging violence against people. The statement requested the public to be more observant and responsible in their actions in order to safeguard public properties and goods and to observe peace and unity in the society.
The statement further said the report and the act is under investigations and the language of the report is being analysed for investigation purposes. It further reads three scholars have been tasked with preparing an evidence-based report identifying the descriptions of Islam and Prophet Mohamed presented in a negative light and in contradiction with Islamic tenets and principles, in the report published by MDN. Ministry of Islamic Affairs is also preparing a report to be submitted to the police, according to MPS.
The statement assured the public legal actions against MDN in addition to promising administrative actions based on the findings of the report prepared by religious scholars after the ongoing investigations.
