Opposition condemns acts of JSC to influence judiciary

Opposition parties have condemned the acts of Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to influence judiciary, saying the opposition would not hesitate to voice against any such actions against the judiciary.

Speaking at a press conference held by Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC), opposition Parliamentarian Mohamed Saeed accused Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed of trying to influence judiciary. He said the presidency of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom observed separation of the executive, legislative and judicial powers while the current administration constitutes to abuse the judiciary for political benefits. He urged the state to stop politicising the judiciary.

The opposition coalition assured at the conference acts by JSC to influence the judiciary would be stopped, accusing JSC of trying to remove the judges on the Supreme Court bench. The administration is working towards appointing specific and targeted judges to the top court in an attempt to control the judiciary, according to the opposition coalition.

The previous administration led by Yameen rejected to enforce a verdict of the Supreme Court and arrested the police commissioner who attempted to administer the verdict. The judges were later arrested after the announcement of a State of Emergency.
