Correction Officers key in rehabilitating prisoners: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has explained correction officers are a key stakeholder in the efforts of Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) to rehabilitate and return prisoners to society and training of officers is essential to reaching the goal.

Speaking to inaugurate a workshop for prison managers titled Management Training for Middle Managers Workshop jointly organised by MCS and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Home Minister Imran explained the workshop is part of efforts of government to reform and better the services of the correctional facilities. The minister urged all prison officers to be patient in dealing with inmates in the challenging environment of prison management.

Noting that prisons management is also part of a social service, Imran requested prison officers to observe honesty, integrity in carrying out their duties. He said the purpose of such workshops is to deliver a service without violating rights of the inmates and return them as useful members of the society once their terms are completed in addition to providing them with the skillsets and experience required to deliver top quality service.

The programme focuses on developing communication skills and awareness on standard operation procedures amongst service officers. 24 Prison Managers from Maldives Correctional Services Headquarters, Male' Prison, Hulhumale' Prison, Asseyri Prison and Maafushi Prison participate in the five-day workshop. Experts from ICRC will deliver the sessions in the workshop.
