The Government of Maldives has instructed fire victims to relocate to other accommodations from the temporary shelters, promising to provide rental for three months.
National Disaster Management Authority (NMDA) revealed 164 people from 38 families are still under state care following the tragic fire on September 20. NMDA further stated 6 of those 38 families are unable to move back to their homes due to renovation currently carried in their houses. The 6 families are expected to move back to their homes in the coming week, according to NDMA.
The authority said 24 families living in temporary shelters were living in rental apartments and therefore, NMDA is making arrangements for them to relocate to new homes. The remaining 8 families lived in their own homes and hence, NMDA is arranging them accommodation from flats developed by the government.
NMDA is also making assessments of the damage in the fire. The loss is worth more than USD 87,000 as indicated in the initial assessments based on 92 households in 18 residential buildings affected in the fire. 41 of the 92 households lost all household items in the fire.
The authorities also carried assessments of 31 buildings to see if they are safe for living. After assessments, some buildings were demolished as they were unsafe. NMDA is determined to distribute financial support from the government and public donations, as soon as the assessments are completed.
The tragic fire that originated in a chemical storage facility destroyed 7 residential buildings and 4 storage facilities, killing a 46-year-old woman.
