Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has decided to investigate Supreme Court judges over operating beyond their jurisdictions and mandate. The decision was made in the 69th meeting of JSC after discussions based on Unconstitutional rulings of the Supreme Court of Maldives compiled on investigating judicial acts beyond jurisdictions.
It is understood that 4 Supreme Court judges will be investigated, which includes Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi, JSC President and Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Areef. In addition, Supreme Court Judge Adam Mohamed Abdulla and Supreme Court Judge Abdul Ghanee Mohamed will also be probed by JSC.
The investigations are also based on the findings of the report Assessment of the Justice Sector Reform Proposals compiled by judicial reform consultant, retired Justice of South Africa Johann Kreigler.
JSC decided to investigate other concerns found during the investigations.
JSC also decided to consult Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary to address the challenges faced in carrying out its mandate based on a decision made by the Supreme Court.
JSC informed 38 cases were scheduled for the 69th meeting, and out of which 3 were discussed. JSC has also set investigation committees for the cases.
The committees were set to investigate the Chief Magistrate Khadheeja Leena and to investigate two disciplinary cases against Civil Court Judge Hassan Faheem Ibrahim, according to JSC.
