Ex-Justice Ali Hameed free after completing sentence

Former Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed has completed his jail sentence.

Ali Hameed was sentenced to jail for 1 year, 7 months and 6 days after he was found guilty of influencing official conduct. Department of Correctional Services did not state when Ali Hameed was set free, although it is believed he was set free last September. He completed a part of his sentence in prison while the remainder was completed under house arrest.

The decision to sentence him for influencing official conduct was upheld by High Court and the Supreme Court. After he was found guilty, he was also revoked of his permit to practice law and the permit to religious preaching.

The former judge was also convicted of obstruction of justice as he refused to hand over his phone to Maldives Police Service after his arrest. He was sentenced to jail for the same duration of 1 year 7 months and 6 days for the offence. However, the High Court overturned the ruling in December.

Ali Hameed, along with former Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, were arrested and sentenced for the same crime. Saeed is still serving his 4 months and 24 days sentence for having found guilty of obstruction of justice as he instructed court officials to disconnect Government E-letter Management Service (GEMS). He is currently serving the sentence under house arrest.
