Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed has said 27 islands are currently being assessed for potential development of tourist resorts.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the activities held to mark the World Tourism Day, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed said the administration is working towards developing tourism in areas without tourist facilities such as hotels and resorts.
Therefore, he said the ministry is making assessments of 27 islands to develop tourist resorts in such areas. He added the islands will only be considered to be developed as resorts only when after Environment Impact Assessments (EIA) and feasibility studies are carried out.
The islands considered for potential resort developments include Uligamu in Haa Alifu Atoll, Naagoashi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, some islands in Laamu Atoll and Faafu Atoll, and Addu City and Fuvahmulah City.
The minister made the comments at a time when the government is working towards developing tourist resorts and other tourist facilities in all parts of Maldives. He explained the development of the resorts will begin next year.
