President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has reiterated the administration is working on ensuring the placement of all necessary measures to prevent fire incidents. The president made the remark during a visit to the site of tragic fire incident at T-Jetty area in Male’ City, Monday evening.
President Solih highlighted the efforts of the fire fighters and volunteers actively involved in putting out the fire. The president thanked the fire fighters for their bravery and the swift response in putting out the blaze. He noted the rapid response of fire fighters and emergency personnel along with the help of volunteers made it possible to contain the situation before the fire spread further and did even more damage.
The fire incident was reported after a speed boat and fuel bowser caught fire, spreading to several nearby fuel bowsers before the fire fighters controlled the fire. T-Jetty area quay wall is allocated for docking sea vessels for refuelling, while a majority of the fuel bowsers used for fuel transportation are often parked nearby.
Meanwhile, the main hospital in the capital city, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has revealed 9 people were treated for various injuries sustained during the fire, including 2 foreigners. A Maldivian, with 50 percent of his body burnt, is being treated in the incentive care unit, according to IGMH. The hospital further revealed 2 were being treated in the high-dependency unit, while another 4 are admitted in the ward. So far, 2 people have being treated and released.
President Solih visited the victims and inquired about their treatment and well-being.
