Government to cover more than 20 percent of fire incident damages: NDMA

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced the government will compensate for more than 20 percent of the damages incurred in the tragic fire accident last Friday.

Speaking to PSM New, Chief Executive Officer Umar Fikry said the percentage of compensation for damages incurred in a disaster is 20 percent which is the standard policy of NDMA. He further explained the compensation does not cover the total damages incurred by the victims, and it, rather, is a support to provide relief for displaced and affected to get back to their normal lives. He said the compensation, however, would be more than 20 percent, as donations from the public will also be provided to the victims, in addition to the amount provided by the government.

Umar Fikry further added the recent flood victims were also compensated by the government for up to 20 percent of the damages they incurred. However, he added the amount they received were around 80% of the damages with the donations received from the public. Therefore, he expects the amount compensated to be much higher for the fire victims as well.

260 of the 770 victims registered at the relief centre due to the tragic were provided with temporary shelter with the assistance of NDMA.
