Ministry of Economic Development has revealed the regularisation programme it had announced is well received, as many expatriates are registering with the ministry.
The special programme to regularise undocumented and illegal expatriate workers in Maldives is well received as many illegal expatriate workers are registering at the centre. The ministry explained the 245 tokens it issues daily runs out within minutes of issuance.
The ministry earlier announced expatriates who have secured a sponsor could submit their regularisation application by the sponsor via Expat Portal, while expats who have no sponsor or employer can register at the centre set up by the ministry within 6 months of the announcement of the regularisation programme.
Currently, the number of expatriate workers from Bangladesh alone is about 130-thousand, half of which is illegal and undocumented workers.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had explained the efforts will generate positive changes to the issue of increasing illegal and undocumented expatriate workers within a year.
