Individuals unrelated to fire sought aid at temporary shelter: NMDA

Chief Executive of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Hisaan Hassan reveals individuals who were unrelated to the tragic fire on Friday night sought shelter at the temporary set up at Kalaafaanu School for victims.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, Chief Executive Hisaan said individuals who were unrelated to the fire and people who do not reside in Male' sought aid and shelter from NDMA. Hisaan further explained NDMA provided assistance for two days regardless of the countries and islands they have come from. He stated NDMA is making arrangements for people to make their identity cards easily in an attempt to ensure they receive the necessary services.

Hisaan also highlighted NMDA provide assistance to 59 expatriates, who were found to be in no way related to the fire according to Maldives Immigration. NDMA provided them with a temporary shelter at an accommodation block of Ministry Youth, Sports and Social Empowerment. However, NMDA will not continue assisting them further and they have been handed over to Maldives Immigration.

Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has completed assessments and declared the air quality in the area as safe. Further, the discontinued sessions in Majeedhiyya School has also commenced once the air quality in the area has been declared safe.
