Land use plan drawn and approved for 69 islands

Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure has revealed, the land use plans for 69 islands have been drawn and approved. Addressing a press briefing, the Land and Survey Authority announced, of these 69 land use plans completed, 4 have been approved by the ministry this year.

They further explained that while the development of 73 land use plans are in progress, there are 48 islands without plans. The ministry expects to start work on these islands this year in collaboration with the respective island councils. The ministry further revealed, 28 islands have requested them for permission to issue residential land. While 19 of these islands have been granted the permission, discussions related to two islands are in progress.

Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure explained, it is also working on drawing the land use plan for the greater Male’ region. A land use plan is a developmental plan regulating the use of unused and reclaimed land in islands in efforts to promote beneficial and efficient land usage.
Government use land use plans, which are developed by the island councils in consultation with the community, to assist island councils to manage land strategically and develop budget for developmental activities under the jurisdiction of the councils.

Lands island councils resolve for farming, agriculture, tourism, residential development and other community and industrial purposes are included in the land use plans the councils develop.
