Transport Ministry does not have plans to install taximetres

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula has revealed there are no plans to install metres in the taxis, expressing support for taxi applications.

Maldives Taxi Drivers Association has expressed disappointment that taximetres have not been installed in the taxis, while the drivers keep complying with the new taxi fares imposed by the ministry. However, the drivers have voiced discontent with the new taxi fares and have pressed for metres to be installed in taxis.

The transport ministry maintains the new taxi fares have been set to benefit the public, reiterating the drivers will not face any loss for following the new prices.

Speaking to PSM News, the transport minister said a survey has been conducted to find the best method in providing taxi services. She said the survey found the best method is to use latest technological innovations instead of opting for taximetres.

Three applications are currently in use according to the new taxi fare regulations and the ministry intends to grant permission to more such applications.

The drivers association has said they welcome the taxi fares set by the transport ministry.
