Parliament Speaker accuses MPS of spying, MNDF denies claim

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated the Maldives Polices Services (MPS) has been spying on him as per the information he had received from Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

Speaking at a meeting of the National Council of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held in Dharubaaruge convention centre, the former president of Maldives said MNDF communicated the issue with him three days earlier. However, the leader of the main ruling party did not comment on why he was being spied.

After Nasheed made the comments, MNDF had published a statement refuting his claims. MNDF explained no such message was communicated with the parliament speaker. MNDF further stated should there be a need, it collaborates with MPS in matters concerning safety of officials entrusted to them.

However, MNDF said these collaborations will take place after a thorough analysis and evaluation of the threat levels on individuals. Currently, neither the parliament nor MNDF has identified any threats on Nasheed. The military assured it shall take necessary measures even if the public communicates a threat on any individuals.

Furthermore, MPS also responded to claims from President Nasheed with a similar rhetoric explaining that it collaborates with MNDF in security measures entrusted on the service. MPS further stated there is no security threat on President Nasheed identified by MPS. No such concerns have been raised by another party either, according to the police.
