Parliament approves to appoint Hashim as new MMA Governor

Parliament of Maldives has approved to appoint Ali Hashim as the new governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). Parliament approved the nomination unanimously with 55 votes.

The decision followed the approval from Parliamentary Committee on Public Finances. The nomination was approved unanimously by all 10 members present at the committee meeting. The parliament also requested public opinion on the nomination. The committee explained there was no concern from the public against appointing Hashim as the governor of the central bank.

Hashim served as the finance minister from 2008 to 2010 during the presidency of former President Mohamed Nasheed.

The post of MMA governor has been vacant after the resignation of Ahmed Naseer in July 2019.
