Current sewerage system not enough for population of Male' City

Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has said the sewerage system of Male' City is not designed to cope with current population of the capital city.

While answering a question posed by a parliamentarian when he was summoned to the parliament for questioning, the environment minister said when the sewerage system was first designed decades ago, it was not predicted that the population would increase to the current level.

The minister also noted installing more pipelines is not a solution to the issue. The matter is currently under discussion between the environment ministry, Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and the relevant authorities.

When asked about the garbage disposal in the city, the minister said it is a problem not only faced by Male' but also other islands. He said a research has been carried out and a company has already been contracted to handle garbage while Ministry of Finance has been informed.

The environment minister also said implementing waste management solutions is a priority of the administration.
