Parliament of Maldives has passed amendments to the Tax Administration Act with the majority of 59 members voting in favour of the bill. The amendment dismisses the current Commissioner General of Taxation Yazeed Mohamed.
After reviewing the bill submitted on behalf of the administration by Parliamentarian Ilyas Labeeb, the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs sent the bill, which dismisses all current board members, to the floor for discussion. However, the parliamentarians voted to dismiss only the commissioner general.
Therefore, Commissioner General of Taxation Yazeed Mohamed and Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer will automatically be dismissed from their posts once the bill is ratified by the president.
The amendment stated that board of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) consists of seven members, including an appointee from Ministry of Finance, to oversee the policies regarding taxation, five members appointed by the president and the commissioner general of taxation. The amendment also states approval from the parliament is required to appoint the board members and the commissioner general of taxation.
