President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed two new Judges to the Supreme Court of Maldives.
At a ceremony held at the President's Office, President Solih presented letters of appointment to Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Aisha Shujoon Mohamed. The president made the appointments under the powers vested in him under Article 148(a) of the Maldivian Constitution, authorising him to appoint judges to the Supreme Court after consulting the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and with the approval of the majority of the parliamentarians present in the vote.
Prior to their appointment, Azmiralda and Shujoon took the oath administered by Chief Justice of Maldives Dr Ahmed Abdullah Didi.
President Solih ratified the 3rd amendment to the Judicature Act on July 23, paving way to increase the number of judges residing on Supreme Court bench from five to seven.
