Rilwan was taken out into open sea and murdered: Suood

President of the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murder and Enforced Disappearances Husnu Al Suood has stated three individuals have testified Ahmed Rilwan was kidnapped and afterwards murdered.

Speaking at a press conference held at President’s Office, the head of the presidential commission said Rilwan was forcefully dragged into a red car in the early hours of August 7, 2014, with two people were sitting on the front seats and one of them was identified as Alif Rauf. Further, two motorcycles also went behind the car. They put him into a dinghy and afterwards was taken to a boat at the sea. The enquirers have also found the name of the boat owner. Suood stated eye witnesses have slightly contradicted in their narration on how Rilwan was killed.

The extremists were responsible for killing Rilwan and Yamin Rasheed who was stabbed and killed about two years later. Suood said some radical individuals have been campaigning on social media under the banner name Sharia for Maldives and has been running a Facebook page since 2012. He said there people have marched on the streets of Male’ City bearing an IS flag in 2014.

A group named Bilad-Asham had expressed abhorrence over a writing by Rilwan in Minivan Daily via Facebook. They have accused Rilwan of giving information to police about Maldivians travelling to fight in the war in Syria. Rilwan had responded to those accusations by messages and had denied any wrongdoing.

Furthermore, Suood and the commission have collected information about many radical groups and how they obtain funds to operate. Supporters of IS and other extremist groups attain funds by committing theft, robbery and other such crimes.
