Maldives should further increase revenue received from tourism: ADB

President of Asian Development Bank (ADB) Takehiko Nakao has said Maldives should take important steps to further increase the revenue received from tourism industry.

At a press conference held part of his three-day visit to Maldives, President of ADB Nakao said the increase in tourists arriving to the country is a significant achievement. Nakao said more steps need to be taken for Maldives to reap the benefits from the tourism industry. He also spoke on the importance of increasing the rate of Maldivians employed and increasing the GDP per capita.

Highlighting the need to increase the rate of Maldivians employed to further expand the economy, the president of ADB noted the jobs that can be created in the fisheries sector including the enhancement of fish farming. He also noted Maldives had maintained the inflation rate and the rate of economic growth for a long period, adding the country has achieved its targets significantly despite the challenges and natural crises such as the 2004 Tsunami.
