Parliament of Maldives has passed a new parliamentary regulations which includes important amendments. The new parliamentary regulations was passed with votes from 61 parliamentarians.
The new parliamentary regulations was formed by a committee comprised of 11 parliamentarians. A further 52 amendments were proposed when the new parliamentary regulations were submitted to the parliament floor. The proposed amendments were put to vote separately, with only 4 amendments rejected by the parliamentarians.
Parliamentarian Ibrahim Shareef, the chair of the 11-member committee which comprised the new parliamentary regulations, said importance was given to find a way to further accelerate the work of the parliament and to ensure the legislative power is free from corruption and influence.
Notable amendments brought to the new parliamentary regulations include omitting 50 percent from the salary if a parliamentarian failed to attend half of the sittings scheduled in a month without a valid reason and slashing the committee allowance if a parliamentarian failed to attend the half of the meetings scheduled in a month. Another notable amendment include registering an office at the Secretariat of the Parliament for parliamentarians to meet their constituents.
