Four judges from High Court have submitted nominations for the Supreme Court bench.
Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has accepted the nominations submitted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Following the consultation of President Solih to appoint Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Aisha Shujoon Mohamed to the Supreme Court, JSC accepted the names were forwarded in accordance with Article 17 of Judges Act. The president made the nominations under the powers vested under Article 148 of the Constitution of Maldives, authorising him to appoint judges to the Supreme Court after consulting with JSC and with the approval of the parliament.
Following the nominations, JSC began accepting other application for the Supreme Court bench. The four judges who applied for the position are High Court judges Abdulla Hameed, Shuaib Hussain Zakariyya, Ali Sameer and Mohamed Niyaz.
The individuals appointed to Supreme Court bench must have practiced law for at least 7 years.
