President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has forwarded the names of Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Aisha Shujoon Mohamed to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) seeking consultations regarding appointing them to the Supreme Court.
The president forwarded the names under the powers vested under Article 148 of the Constitution, authorising the president to appoint judges to the Supreme Court after consulting the JSC and with the approval of the majority of the parliamentarians present at the vote.
President Solih ratified the third amendment to the Judicature Act on July 23, paving the way to increase the number of Judges residing on the Supreme Court bench from 5 to 7.
If both individuals nominated by president gets appointed, the names will make history by becoming the first ever female judges to be seated at Supreme Court since the new constitution was implemented.
