Parliamentary Group of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has rejected the proposal to form a super parliamentary committee.
Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed proposed to establish a super committee to oversee the appointment and dismissal of members from independent institutions. During the vote taken in the parliamentary group, it was decided the super committee will not be approved.
A parliamentarian who attended the meeting said it is inadequate to form an additional committee, since there is an existing committee to oversee work of independent institutions. He revealed the parliamentary group did not support to establish a super committee which may diminish the authorities granted to the parliament committees.
Any submission or proposal to the parliament must be passed by the bloc which comprises of 65 parliamentarians, according to regulations of MDP Parliamentary Group.
Meanwhile, Leader of the MDP Parliamentary Group Ali Azim assured the bloc will uphold the regulations. He said the biggest issue in appointing members to independent institutions is the lack of proper regulations.
