MDP wants commissions to succeed: Parliament Majority Leader

Majority Leader of Parliament Ali Azim has revealed Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) wants the commissions formed by the parliament to succeed, adding efforts of the main ruling party are shaped in achieving the objective.

Speaking to PSM News regarding appointing members to independent institutions and compiling the mandates, Parliamentary Group Leader of MDP Ali Azim stated sturdy policies need to be formulated in appointing members to independent institutions. He noted the lack of sturdy policies in appointing members to independent institutions during the past was the main reason for the failure of some important commissions. He further said major efforts will be exerted to ensure the commissions established are responsive and responsible, as MDP has a supermajority in the parliament.

Moreover, Azim revealed the reason why citizens lost faith in independent institutions in the past 10 years was due to the carelessness in appointing members to the commissions. In addition, he said it is a good policy to comprise the commission with a mix of youth, elderly and experienced individuals from the relevant fields. He highlighted attempts to form a special committee led by the speaker of parliament comes as part of efforts to ensure the commissions established are held responsible.

Discussions have been held to establish a committee with parliamentary group leaders and chairs of parliamentary committees to oversee the members at independent institutions.
