Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has stated over 200 companies operating in Male' region have not paid Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the first quarter. The companies which did not pay tax include 23 tourism sector businesses and 134 general sector businesses.
MIRA revealed before the publishing of the names, taxpayers have been contacted several times and informed of the penalties they might face if they do not file their returns and pay their GST. MIRA has also notified these taxpayers via SMS and visited the premises of those they were unreachable via phone.
The names of the companies in the list will be removed once the necessary payments are made, according to MIRA.
