State is run by separate powers for the first time: Minister Shifaz

Minister at President's Office Mohamed Shifaz has claimed the state is run by separate powers for the first time, during the Presidency of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Speaking exclusively to PSM News, the former parliamentarian refuted rumours the parliament is running the state. The minister said such claims are made by critics, as people are not aware on how the state is run. He maintained the state is run under the full control of President Solih, as the head of the state and the executive power.

Highlighting the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) holds a supermajority in the parliament, Minister Shifaz noted the party would continue to assist the administration to achieve the electoral pledges and implement the policies. However, he said that cannot be considered as the parliament running the state.

Furthermore, the minister said sharing power and checking one another is a main aspect of the presidential system. He noted the executive power and the legislative are functioning as they should for the first time in Maldives.

Moreover, Shifaz said Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is mandated to monitor the judicial sector, adding although the institution comprises of the speaker of parliament and a representative from the parliament, it cannot be considered as the parliament is running the judiciary. He expressed MDP pledged to reform the judiciary and that the party would continue working on completing the pledge.
